Ben’s January Letter
Dear Friends in Christ,
After the busy month of December, January offers just one church holiday of note:
Epiphany. It marks the visit of the Magi to Jesus; their astronomical insight that something big was happening in Judea and their presentation of lavish gifts to the infant Jesus. In the rush of late-December (when I am writing this) it all makes perfect sense—why not show up with treasure for a baby? But by the first week of January, as decorations go back into storage and many of us finally have time for a nap, it feels…over the top. What is this peasant family with a newborn going to do with frankincense?
2023 was an exciting year for me—and for us. Big celebrations, elaborate arrangements, thousands of small decisions—these defined my life at home and at church. But as 2023 turns to 2024, I am ready for things to be uncomplicated. I am craving simplicity. To that end: this year I am eschewing New Year’s resolutions and am instead naming a humbler intention. I want to live more simply. And I hope you will join me.
What does this mean? I don’t know yet! Maybe it means we stop focusing on small things at church, and instead focus on big ones (like loving God and loving our neighbor!). Or maybe it means outsourcing some tasks to paid staff so that we can focus more deeply on what matters. Maybe it means buying less. Maybe it means turning off the television, or putting down our phones. Maybe it means asking ourselves “are we bringing frankincense to a baby?”…and then rethinking the plan. I don’t know the way yet! But you’ve heard it here first: my intention for 2024 is simplicity.
As you put away Christmas decorations, prepare for quiet nights in, and return to “real life”… consider with me what it might mean to have a simple 2024. And dream with me of a life (and church!) less complicated.
In Christ,
Rev. Ben
